Sea captain Elwood (Boris Karloff) saves his wife's (Kay Stewart) life
when she's bitten by a snake, even though he doesn't love her. Then
though, he learns about a rich widow who is rather fond of him, and
he decides he has to get rid of his wife after all, taking her with him on
his next journey and slowly poisoning her en route. Thing is, his wife's
spirit comes back to haunt him, and it doesn't take long for him to go
half out of his mind, lose his command and whatever else. Ultimately he
gets another command on another ship no other captain would touch ... but
this ship breaks up in the middle of the Ocean (but off-screen), and while
the crew is saved, Captain Elwood dies in the ordeal ... Old
fashioned ghost story that, given its naval theme, could have done with a
few outdoor shots of the sea, ships and the like - which of course might
have proven way too costly for 1950's television.Like it is, the episode
is not too bad and beautifully carried by Boris Karloff, but don't expect
anything great either.
