It seems that hotelboys Frankie (Frankie Darro) and Jeff (Mantan
moreland) jut can't stay out of trouble: This time around they - through
no fault of their own - witness a guest of the hotel, Dayton (Gene
O'Donnell), being shot, and immediately, Frankie tries to get involved in
the investigations which his brother Tom (Richard Bond) is conducting.
Soon, Jeff and Mantan, who unwillingly tags along, find al sorts of
clues leading to the dead man's partner in crime Whitney (Tristram
Coffin), Johnny Burke (William Costello), the notorious owner of a
gambling den, and to his moll Sonya (Vickie Lester). And eventually,
Whitney ends up dead while Mantan and Jeff end up with 60.000 Dollars it
turns out the two dead man have cheated out of Johnny Burke - money that
rightfully belongs to Dayton's sister Joyce (Janet Shaw) and which
everybody seems to be after.
After much to and fro which also leads to Frankie's detective brother
being demoted to patrolman and the press - namely reporter Pete (Paul
Maxey) - having a fieldday with the police's lack of success, Jeff and
Mantan can eventually - and rather accidently - get a hold of johnny
Burke, the baddie of the picture, and hand him over to Frankie's brother
Tom so he can be reinstated as a detective.
Like most films of the Frankie & Mantan series, this one is a light
crime comedy that might not be too well written let alone well directed -
but that aside, Frankie and mantan make a good pairing with an expert
timing for comedy (especially Mantan, naturally) who somehow manage to
lift this otherwise average picture over comparable stuff.
Enjoyable and entertaining.
