A spaceship crashlands in the sea off California after a mission to
outer space, and the two surviving astronauts, Newman (Steve Barkett) and
Matthews (Larry Latham) find the planet devastated by a nuclear war. And
as Matthews has been injured in the crash, it's up to Newman to explore
what's left over from LA - which oddly enough includes a trip to the
Museum of Natural History, where the dying curator (Forrest J. Ackerman)
entrusts Newman with Christopher (Christopher Barkett), a boy he has taken
care of in the aftermath of the war in a son's stead. Soon enough, Newman
also finds a female survivor, Sarah (Lynne Margulies), ant the two fall in
love, naturally. But all is not good, as the city is plagued with
homicidal mutants who ... well, are homicidal. But worse than that,
there's a really nasty (non-mutant) gang led by Cutter (Sid Haig) roaming
the neighbourhood, killing all men pretty much on sight, but raping and
enslaving all women and children. So Newman, Sarah, Christopher and
Matthews make it their mission to raid their arsenal and free their
prisoners - which they seemingly do with ease despite being outnumbered,
with nothing but the moment of surprise on their side ... and thus, their
little tribe soon also includes Helen (Linda Stiegler) and Laura (Laura
Anne Barkett). Cutter though isn't a man who likes his weapons and slaves
stolen, so when Newman and Christopher are out searching the town for
provisions, Cutter's man attack their homebase, knocking out Matthews and
killing all the women. Newman is so enraged by this he decides to dish out
justice - but he's one against many ... A 1980s post nuclear
action flick as good, as bad, as macho and as pulpy as they come:
Basically, the storyline is very thin and overly clichéed, and the more
thoughtful sequences seem out of place - but the plot serves as a good
hanger for action and violence, sprinkled with bits of nudity, and all of
this is charmingly in your face, with blood squirting from every wound,
fights not always following the laws of nature when pure brutality doesn't
permit it, plenty of stuntwork and grappling, mean shootouts, and quite a
number of killings. So no, it's not a very brain-heavy affair - but
massive nostalgic fun!!!
