Randy (Glenn Berggoetz) is just your friendly neighbourhood mechanic,
somone you wouldn't reckon too smart, but he can hear what's wrong with
your car from the sound of your engine - so one has to love Randy. But
Randy loves to read, and recently he has read an article in National
Geographic that claimed the Aztecs tended to eat human eyeballs to
develop the ability to see into the future - and Randy figures since the
Aztecs are said to have been one of the smartest races on the planet,
there might be something to this human eye diet. So eventually, he starts
to kill his customers, eat their eyeballs (not necessarily in that order),
then dispose of their bodies and cars by shoving them over the same cliff
over and over again - with none being any the wiser, especially not
detective Martin (Paul Rohrer), who loves the "secret recipe"
cookies Randy tends to serve him, but couldn't spot a clue if he's hit
over the head with it (and yeah, that happens). Randy's talent to look
into the future does develop eventually, but it's a bit spotty: The girl
(Kasha Fauscett) bound to be his future wife in his visions turns out to
be a major bitch, and the zombie apocalypse that he foresees just doesn't
happen, but hey, if the Aztecs had been 100% accurate, they would have
foreseen Columbus and defended themselves against him, right? Now
one thing's for sure, Auto Shop of Horrors can't denie its roots in
1980s B horror: The plot is really far-fetched and silly (and knows it),
the dialogue's unrealistic yet hilariously (and intentionally) so, the use
of music (especially pop tunes) comes across as forced (again, hilariously
so), and the over-use of the same stock footage (a car going over a cliff
and exploding upon impact) is seriously strained (though in a - and I
repeat myself here - hilarious way). Plus, the gore effects are mostly of
a practical nature and in a grotesque rather than gruesome way, which
wildly adds to the fun ... and that's what the whole movie is, great FUN,
vintage (and not only vintage) horror condensed to this, and hilariously
so!!!
