There have been animal killings in the region of late, all under
mysterious circumstances that included their genitals removed, and of
course it's not long before this is linked to the legend of the
Chupacabra. And this in turn attracts the attention of a quartet of
documentary filmmakers - hobbie-cryptozooligist of the "I want to
believe"-variety Amber (Sarah Nicklin), her more founded in reality
male counterpart Joe (Michael Reed), doubter, cynic and professional
pessimist Morgan (Alex Hayek), and their cameraman Dave (Bryan James) - to
roam exactly these woods for evidence ... and when a ranger (Elliot Book)
tries to turn them away and they spot a "biologist" (Mike Wood)
in a gasmask doing inexplicable things, they fancy they're on the right
track. And it's true that they find many a weird occurence in the woods
they wander, things they rate as evidence ... but frankly, nothing
groundbreaking enough that would keep them from partying their first night
in the wild away - which is a bad idea, as there really is something in
the woods that's really after them ... So ok, Chupacabra
Territory is a found footage movie, which per se might not be to
everyone's liking - but actually, much more than just another found
footage exercise this works like a fun old fashioned monster movie that's
big on build-up of tension, keeping the threat in the dark till the end,
infusing some humour and even dirty jokes into the proceedings, featuring
fun characters one just has to love or (better yet) love to hate, and that
has a truly tense finale. Sure, it may not break any new ground genre-wise
... but it's fun to watch!
