Venus (Alexis Kendra) is a newby at the lapdance club, but veteran
Chanel (Monda Scott) is happy to give her advice how to really succeed
with customers ... and the first customer Venus tries her new tricks on,
Brian (Woody Naismith), she already falls in love with ... and he with her
as well - at least sort of, basically she reminds him of his wife who
eventually committed suicide, so he's in a bit of an understandably
unstable state. Anyways, for a time their relationship borders perfect,
and their feelings seem genuine. Then though, Venus finds out that Brian
texts back and forth with one Christine (Elizabeth Sandy), who also turns
out to be one of his nude models. Now Brian claims that she is an old
friend of his, and even admits they had a short affair a while back (well
before he even met Venus), but that's long over ... but Venus isn't so
sure about this, and she starts following Brian around, and even catches
him having a dinner date with Christine - and shortly after, Brian stops
by to break up. Now that totally unhinges Venus, and she's sure that
Christine is behind it all. And Christine actually does prove to be a
bitch if there ever was one, and of course, things soon get out of hands.
But then again, it eventually becomes questionable if Venus's own
perception is entirely trustworthy ... Goddess of Love
is, as there is no other way to put it, quite the trip. Actually it starts
all harmlessly, even bothering the boring a bit (if it wasn't that sensual
that is), but pretty soon it hops onto a downward spiral the almost David
Lynchian-way (without ever aping Lynch's style and approach that is), and
drags us deep into the warped perception of its main character, her
paranoia and visions of violence and horrors, only in the pay-off tell a
vastly different story that makes perfect sense in hindsight. And a very
visual directorial effort that nevertheless never loses focus of the
film's story, and a very strong central performance by Alexis Kendra make
this one a very memorable and also very creepy movie!
