Wes (Jesse Janzen) is a paranormal investigator - who's really into it
more for fame than scientific curiosity, so a TV show with him front and
center would be his big chance. And for his first show, he has landed a
scoop for sure, he and his team - producer Randy (Randy Nundlall jr),
soundman Austin (Austin Blank) and cam guy Rob (Robert Livings) - get to
enter a schoolhouse that has been declared off limits 12 years ago after a
gas leak killed some students and a teacher and that's supposed to be
haunted, and only now has the caretaker Geoff (Greg Sestero) Wes and his
team express permission to shoot the show there. Now Wes is all excited
about this and thinks he's made it, but Randy's not so sure, figuring that
always over-the-top Wes needs a partner to ground the show - and who'd be
better than Wes's empath sister Izzy (Leah Finity)? There's just one
problem, Wes and Izzy have had a fall-out two years ago and haven't spoken
to one another since, and while Randy has persuaded Izzy to come, it's
clear from the first minute she doesn't want to be there, and Wes doesn't
want her there. It's only for the sake of the show that the two start
talking again at all, and only gradually do they start to trust and even
like each other again. But there's a whole other problem facing the show,
as it turns out the school is actually haunted, and whatever spirit's
caught in the school is out for vengeance - and that's not even the sole
reason our heroes face at the location at hand ...
This being a found footage movie, it can't overcome all the
shortcomings of the genre, like an over-reliance on shaky cameras, and an
approach to things that sometimes seems too improvised and drawn out to
carry the intended emotions. But that said, the film still scores, and
scores high, at a lot of levels, like it puts an emphasis on atmosphere,
it has some really good jump scares, and the performances are all spot-on,
with Leah Finity deserving a special mention on this level as she clearly
makes her fear and despair palpable once the film kicks into gear. So in
all, this is certainly well worth a watch!
