It's May 1945, the South Pacific, when an US American bomber, the
Dragon Lady, has to hit water behind enemy lines, and the nine airmen have
to abandon ship to try their luck on safety rafts. Help is on the way from
the 4th Emergency Rescue Squadron, and ultimately the survivors are picked
up by an amphibian plane. But during the rescue mission, the pilot of that
plane has to give his life saving others ... A documentary
about one of the many acts of heroism during World War II, this movie
takes an interesting approach as a documentary/feature hybrid that plays
its action out in great (re-enacted) detail, not so much to add spectacle
though but to make the danger and the fear of the situation palpable,
which is why the camera instead of going for the scope of the situation
usually stays close to the characters. And this serves really well in
setting up the story the interviewees tell in detail, with also adding
many details to frame the enactments in historical context. And the
outcome is not only an interesting piece of history but also a true story
that plays very much like a fascinating thriller, and above all a film
that gets World War II not only in facts but also on an emotional level.
