Nick (Cody N. Carter) has just been released from prison where he spent
the last 10 years for having killed his wife in a blind rage after she
admitted to him their son isn't actually his. But now out again, he wants
to get his life back together and go the straight and narrow - and
fortunately his cousin Mark (Carlo Campbell) gives him a place to stay and
even a job as bartender in his bar. And soon enough, Nick even finds a
girlfriend in fellow bartender Keke (Deja Gilmore). However the world by
and large doesn't really appreciate an ex-con, so Nick actually gets in
trouble with his parole officer (Robert Dobson) for spending the night
with his girlfriend. And then there's local bully Smack (Chris Cream), a
wannabe bigshot who gives Nick a sound beating just because his
troublemaker girlfriend Judy (Tellisha Love) felt disrespected by him. Now
this gets him on the radar of detectives Fitzgerald (Melanie DiPiero) and
Ferguson (Dominic King), who long wanted to get dirt on Smack - but Nick
refuses to play their snitch. And then Smack and Judy are killed, while in
an unrelated incident Nick falls out with Keke and Mark. And as Fitzgerald
and Ferguson are hard pressed to bring Smack's killer to justice, they
know where to look ...
A rather compelling and also exciting blend of social drama
and crime thriller, Last Shot seems to find the right balance
between the two genres rather effortlessly, basically because it chooses
stringent storytelling over anything else and doing so emphasises on
characters rather than delivering messages. And a steady pace keeps things
flowing all the time, while a solid cast carries this one rather nicely,
all resulting in good but thoughtful entertainment.
