It's 1984, and quite some time before smartphones could direct you the
right way to pretty much anywhere you want to go, and let them phone for
help any time they please ... and yet, three young men
(Nigel Grinstead, Andrew Barr, Dean Young) dare to venture into the woods
far far away from civilisation to find the camping ground one of them
(Grinstead) has discovered many moons ago to celebrate the birthday of
another (Barr) to get drunk and high without repercussions or anyone
knowing even. Thing is, against their expectations, they are not alone in
the woods, and the guy who's there with them is a dangerous and malformed
psychopath (John Migliore) - and when he introduces himself by
slaughtering one of the group (Young), the others pretty much they're
fucked ... A fun throwback movie to the 1980's that in one way
really captures the spirit of yesteryear and features a nice string of
vintage props (most charming, a Polaroid camera) as well as recreating the
feel of slashers of old - but not without putting an ironic spin to it and
featuring some post modern references (like one character hinting at the
absence of smart phones in a highly original way) - and above all, it's
really fun to watch, thanks to likeable characters (heck, even the
psycho's likeable in a way), some great situation comedy, suitable
meanness in all the right spots, and actually a pretty decent narrative
buildup to it all. Fun, really!
