Ramy (Hakim Brahimi), a young man from the Middle East, is all set to
visit medical school in Montréal, in part to find peace for the premature
death of his mother (Natalie Tannous). Ramy finds abode in the home of his
uncle Hani (Manuel Tadros), and it seems the future's all set for him. But
seeing Montréal's cultural life revives Ramy's secret ambition to become
a poet, and then his cousin Tamer (Jade Hassouné), a punk musician, takes
him to one of his concerts where Ramy meets two local girls, music
promoter Yaz (Sana Asad) and photographer Desiree (Jasmina Parent). Ramy
feels attracted to them both if on different levels, as he sees Desiree as
his muse and would like Yaz to be his lover. Thing is, while Yaz is not at
all immune to his avances, she sees him more as a lovely distraction than
a partner for life, preferring to live a promiscuous lifestyle with her
and only her in the center, and Desiree wants to be more than just his
source for inspiration - and since the two women are good friends, things
eventually go down in flames. And as heartbroken as he is, the whole story
prompts Ramy to make a life-changing decision and finally follow his true
passion ...
A very impressive film as it tells a story that's extremely
relatable to everyone (even if you couldn't be less of a poet and/or
medical student from the Middle East). But as universal as the basic story
might be, director Patricia Chica is also very successful in making the
cultural life in Montréal look vibrant and feel palpable while never
letting the enviroment smother the story the film is telling. And a strong
ensemble cast of course also help to bring the movie to life, and making
this a really good watch.
