To give a precise synopsis of The Prince of Heavens is next to
impossible as it's a very abstract film with little narrative structure
and yet strong associative roots, open to all sorts of interpretations.
Basically, it's about a man (Abdou M'Bodji) who goes through a series of
torments, but it's not clear how much is happening for real, how much is
derived from his memory, how much are drug-induced dreams, how much
premonitions of his future - and in some cases it seems to be all of the
above. But be the actual story of the movie what it may, it
definitely takes backseat to the experience this movie is, a fascinating
and powerful blend of mostly nightmarish images accompanied by
otherworldly soundscapes that just keep the viewer on the edge of one's
seat due to their suggestive power and that will no doubt have the viewer
piece together one's own story in the process. True, this abstract
approach might not be everybody's thing, but those who like their movies
decidedly weird will no doubt enjoy - in a macabre way.
