It's 10 years ago that Jinelle (Donna Hamblin) and Drax's (Mark
Gordon Buckley) son Jacob has died - and Jinelle still hasn't learned how
to cope. Well, the first five years she even refused to leave the house,
while since she has started a vlog to share her experiences with the world
and ask the world for assistance, so that might be considered an
improvement. But it's around Jacob's 14th birthday that she begins to lose
it. So much so that Drax starts to worry and starts vlogging behind her
back. Thing is, Jinelle has apparently turned to the occult to bring Jacob
back, and in her mind, it worked as well, to a point where this becomes a
situation impossible for Drax to cope with ... Told found
footage style as a series of vlogs and hidden camera footage and
intentionally avoiding spectacle, this is really an actors' movie, with
Donna Hamblin, who's front and center in this one, giving a very strong
and empathetic performance, and Mark Gordon Buckley giving solid support
as the guy trying to keep things together. And in their mostly separate
scenes they really manage to create a certain kind of unease, even
creepiness, not so much in what's said but what's left out, what can be
read between the lines, making this more than just a tale about a woman
who might have conjured the ghost of her son or might have just gone off
the hook (the film remains vague about that), but a compelling story about
loss and coping and guilt, one that might be slowburn in build-up, but
also one that really goes under your skin. If this has gotten
you at all interested, the film's available on DVD from
