Basically, Yesteryear is an experiment about collective memory,
splicing together (rather mundane) footage from home videos from various
not always related sources from exclusively past decades in a rather
random manner (though grouped to highlight various events) with no
explanation given, not even to who the people in the videos are or how the
different shots are connected - if at all that is. Now all this
might sound rather random, no more than a futile exercise in editing,
however the result is oddly mesmerizing, as without given any cultural or
social or historical context beyond what's really on screen (like
"birthday", "Christmas", "New Year's Eve"),
one just starts to liken the footage to one's own memories, explore one's
own past through the memories of a complete stranger - and that's really
quite a fascinating process.
