Your new movie Vic Effects - in a few words, what's it about?

The movie is about a foley artist who gets hired to make sound effects for a troubling movie.

Being a sound designer yourself, how much of your own experience made it into Vic Effects, and to what extent can you identify with your movie's lead character Vic?

A lot went into my experience with sound designing this film with work I've done in the past for short films, and my overall love for sound design.

Other sources of inspiration when writing Vic Effects?

Documentaries and a movie called Berberian Sound Studio, which I only discovered after writing the script for Vic Effects. There's not many films about foley artists, so I felt like I was bringing something new to the horror world with this.

Vic Effects is a film that plays with different layers of reality as well as hallucinations and the like - so how easy or hard was it not to (literally) lose your plot telling a story that way?

For me it was easy, cause I felt like the plot was easy to follow, but yet I like to fuck with people's heads. I always add Easter eggs for my movies, and I hope to force you to pay attention to everything, or you're going to miss out on something that's key to the movement of the story, but I like when they are confused and ask questions, cause maybe they need to rewatch it again, and that's ok with me.

Do talk about Vic Effects' approach to horror!

A man getting his guts ripped out of his body doesn't work unless sound is in the mix of it all. Sound effects is so important to horror films, and this is my tribute to it. It's a horror film about horror sounds.

A few words about your overall directorial approach to your story at hand?

I think I kept it simple, and the actors did all the heavy lifting cause I think they were great.

What can you tell us about Vic Effects' cast, and why exactly these people?

I've used these people on my first film Evil Lurks which is on YouTube now, and I'm all about being comfortable with what works for me.

Do talk about the shoot as such, and the on-set atmosphere?

When people are locked in, this set was easy and fun to work on. We never had to do a re-shoot, so that's key.

Together with John Mackniskas, xou were also responsible for your movie's sound design - so do talk about that aspect of Vic Effects and its creation for a bit?

It was all about getting sounds and experimenting, and hearing what worked, and what didn't. You don't go to foley school, it's all about what works for you, and that's it. My strength is my instincts, and I know how to translate that to John, and we go from there.

The $64-question of course, where can Vic Effects be seen?

Vic Effects will be available on digital and physical media on March 10th

Anything you can tell us about audience and critical reception of Vic Effects?

We've gotten positive feedback from festivals and our screening, so hopefully it continues.

From what I know, Vic Effects was your first film as a director - so could you ever be persuaded to return to the director's seat? And/or any other future projects you'd like to share?

This is my first feature that I fully did everything, but I wrote and co-directed my first feature call Evil Lurks (2022), which is available on Tubi, YouTube, and I have physical copies available as well. I'm also shooting a horror drama called Hug These Bones.

What got you into sound design in the first place, and did you receive any formal education on the subject?

I love sound, so I got into it with just doing it.

What can you tell us about your filmwork prior to Vic Effects?

Evil Lurks is my first feature, and prior to that some short films ranging from comedy to horror.

How would you describe yourself as a director, and how as a sound designer?

I try to keep things simple and chill, but yet take chances, and hopefully it works.

Filmmakers, sound people, whoever else who inspire you?

As for filmmakers, I love Paul Thomas Anderson, Kubrick, David Fincher, the Adams Family (low-budget horror filmmakers) and Spike Lee, and anyone that create their own energy, and not following a trend.

Your favourite movies?

The Master, Night of the Demons, Terminator.

... and of course, films you really deplore?

Batman and Robin.
