Your new movie 9 Windows
- in a few words, what's it about, and what can you tell us about your
character in it?
9
Windows is a modern retelling of Hitchcock’s classic Rear
Window. It follows my character Liza, after a tragic accident she comes across
multiple murders online and begins a search to find and stop the
killer. What did you draw upon to bring your
character to life, and how much Diana Garle can we find in Liza? I think Liza in the film can come off as a bit of a bully at first,
which she is, however it was up to me to find the empathy in that.
I’ve felt true grief before and lost people I have loved and been so
angry about it trying to find a way to release the anger. Although I
think Liza could have benefited from a bit of mental health therapy, I
can totally relate on lashing out with anger from feeling grief and
hopelessness. As
you're playing a person with disability in 9
Windows, how did you prepare for that aspect of your role? I wanted to make it as authentic as possible and although she is
in a wheel chair, her diagnosis was never to be in one for the rest of
her life, it was meant to be temporary while in recovery. From the
moment I got cast I immediately reached out to director Lou Simon [Lou

chair I was going to be filming with and spent most if not all of my
free time sitting and moving on it to get very comfortable with
traveling and maneuvering it. Additionally, I would put weights on my
ankles to help stop me from having random movements around my legs.
How did you get involved with the project in the first place?
I was very fortunate to be a part of a feature film that I shot during
the pandemic, Negativity, written and directed by Jonathan Vargas. Lou
actually saw the film when it finally had its official screening
premiere the following year. She reached out to me after seeing
Negativity to audition for Liza, and a few weeks later I was on
set. To what extent could you identify with 9
Windows' approach to horror, and is that a genre at all dear to
you? I think 9
Windows really sparked my love for the horror/thriller
genre. Since filming, I’ve starred in 3 other horror films. 9
Windows really goes into the suspense of what horror really is, it
leaves things to your imagination which can be scarier than what you
would expect. I love a good film that keeps you on your toes, and
horror is great at that. What can you tell us about 9
Windows' director Lou Simon, and what was your collaboration like?
Lou is freaking awesome. She is someone who truly loves the art of
horror movie filmmaking and you feel it on set. She was a very giving
director yet very clear on what she wanted but also keeping the
environment very light-hearted on set. She’s a real badass. As
9 Windows was filmed
entirely on an extended reality stage, what was that experience like?
It was gnarly but extremely fun on my end. It took a few hours at
first to get used to, however my training is in theater so it was
similar to working on a stage with a 2D set except it moved behind
you. Doing the car crash scene was my favorite because it felt so
real. Also working in a studio made for a very cohesive 9-5 schedule
which was awesome.
Do talk about the shoot as such, and the on-set atmosphere!
We actually shot the film in 12 days, which is a very fast turn-around
but it really was such a joyful experience. Everyone knew they were a
part of something special and were giving it their all. Our crew mostly
consisted of Full Sail students and they were the absolute best, I
hope to work with them again when they are out in the field
professionally. And what can I say about the amazing counterparts I
had as scene partners? I felt so privileged to work with the three
boys. Michael Paré [Michael
Paré interview - click here] was such a professional, came in for one day and nailed
his scenes in one take, inspiring. William Forsythe was not only one of the
best/seasoned actors I’ve ever had a chance to work with but he was
also one of the kindest humans towards me on the planet as well
as a wealth of knowledge. William was always willing to not only give
advice but to also reassure me that my choices were great and that he
was proud of me. Christopher Millan [Christopher

set because
we spent most of our time laughing between takes, we built a strong
bond which I think translates nicely into the film. I can’t imagine
anyone else being Jeff, he was perfect for it. Any
future projects you'd like to share? My film The Serenade Charade, which is another thriller I lead, is
going to be making a festival route this upcoming year and will
hopefully be available to stream after the festivals. I will also be
taking my talents back to the stage next spring! What got you into
acting in the first place, and did you receive any formal training on the
subject?
I’ve been acting since I was 5 years old and been training
since I was a kid. My background is in theater. What can you tell us about your filmwork prior
to 9 Windows?
I started acting when I was kid. My first jobs were all commercials
and once I became a teen aged I did a few Spanish soap operas-novelas. Towards the later years of my teens, I got an incredible
opportunity to do TISCH School of the Arts summer high school abroad
program, where I was able to spend working in Dublin. Once I
graduated high school, I booked a job at a union repertory theater
when I worked as an actor in their company for 4 years. In 2015 I
wanted to pivot back to onscreen and so although I continue to work on
stage from time to time I am a working actor doing mostly on-screen
work (commercials, TV and film) on a regular bases. I feel quite
fortunate to have had the career up until now. If you want to stay
updated with my projects follow me on socials @dianagarle How
would you describe yourself as an actress, and some of your techniques to
bring your characters to life? For me it's all about the subtext. What is the character seeing
and feeling that they are not telling you directly. I love to
dive into roles from the innermost personal level by researching
behaviors that align with the characters motives and finding
empathy in every action. I love working with Uta Hagen's 9
questions and tend to ask myself those questions multiple times
through out the preproduction process to truly understand the
character's action and reaction motivations. Actresses (and indeed
actors) who inspire you? Emma Stone, Carey Mulligan,
Bradley Cooper and Tom Hanks. Your favourite movies?
