Your new movie Lyvia's House - in a few words, what's it about, and what can you tell us about your character in it?

Lyvia’s House follows a couple as they leave their busy lives to move somewhere new. Upon arrival they quickly learn that their new home isn’t quite what it seems. It’s a fantastic character driven thriller with a ton of twists and turns that are sure to surprise you.

My character Johnny Beers, is the new boyfriend of the main character. On top of the relationship being very new and both of them uprooting their lives for his job, Johnny has some of his own issues he is working through. That’s all I can say, but I know you will enjoy meeting not only Johnny but the entire cast in our new movie Lyvia’s House.

What did you draw upon to bring your character to life, and how much Joshua Malekos can we find in Johnny Beers?

There is SO MUCH Joshua Malekos in Johnny Beers! A big part of my preparation is finding myself in him, because otherwise how can I create an organic performance. Some of it is an easy connection, Johnny is very charming and goofy, I’d like to think I too am charming and funny. He has anxiety and so do I. Other things I had to dig deeper on! I’m proud of how he turned out.

How did you get involved with the project in the first place?

I was fortunate enough to have an audition for the film. I have tried as hard as I can to find anything interesting going on in the Sacramento area, even as we have made our move to Los Angeles and now New York! As soon as I met with writer Patricia V. Davis and director Niko Volonakis I knew I had to be a part of it. I'm so grateful to have been given the chance to portray Johnny.

What can you tell us about your director Niko Volonakis, and what was your collaboration like?

Niko has a vision and knowledge for film that goes far beyond what most directors have. He is so talented and such a genuine person, one of the best people I have ever worked with. Both he and Patricia have become family to me and we are all going to be working together for a long time.

Do talk about the shoot as such, and the on-set atmosphere!

The shoot was such a blast, it was very indie. The team, though small, was efficient and got really good stuff day in and day out. The atmosphere was great, everyone had a sense of humor and we joked around nonstop. The Lyvia’s House team will always be bonded by the indie filmmaking experience. It was not easy, but I am so proud of what we have made.

Any future projects you'd like to share?

We are beginning to pitch for funding on our new arthouse indie creature feature Isle of Boar, I’m incredibly proud of the script and even prouder of the team we are assembling. I’m also in a new film coming out next year titled Antonio’s Road.

What got you into into acting in the first place, and did you receive any formal training on the subject?

I have always loved it, I know that’s the cliché but it’s true. I have an old Sony film camera with home movies that we used to make when I was 8 or so. I would play James Bond or a mini golfer or whatever and we would write a little script. I just never lost the drive and I work very hard trying to get work in a tough industry because of it.

I was trained by my wonderful mentor Ryan McKinney in the techniques of Meisner. Once I moved away from Sacramento, I began to study my favorite performers and performances to develop better techniques. I also read a ton of books on different strategies that came about around the same time as Meisner.

What can you tell us about your filmwork prior to Lyvia's House?

Prior to Lyvia’s House I had worked on film, television and commercials across the Northern California area. One of the greatest experiences of my life was traveling out into the woods near Nevada City for a fantastic thriller titled Twisted. The director, Vibeke Muasya has done a lot to push me in the right direction and it did feel like a once in a lifetime experience. I hope that Lyvia’s House can push all of us into the next chapter of our careers.

How would you describe yourself as an actor, and some of your techniques to bring your characters to life?

I would describe myself as primarily professional, I do a lot of prep and research for every role and I take my craft seriously. However, once I get to set, I’ve been told I am a very easy person to work with! I love helping any way I can, even if it’s just making people laugh or carrying gear.

For bringing characters to life, I do feel that picking out outfits and music help me to develop a personality! I love to research things related to my character and I do spend a decent amount of time digging into the emotional struggles of my character.

Actors (and indeed actresses) who inspire you?

There are quite a few very talented performers who inspire me, but I will limit myself to two: The first is perhaps the greatest to grace the screen (and stage) Meryl Streep. She is so fantastic and believable in everything she does, she is always so reactive and present in each and every scene and I strive to be half as good as she is. Another performer that inspires me is Bill Murray. His comedic timing is just perfect and so natural to the world he is playing in. My personal sense of humor is very sarcastic and playful which is kind of his whole thing.

Your favourite movies?

Oh gosh, what a tough question. I’ll just list a few: I am obsessed with the entire Wes Anderson collection and always look forward to his new work. A few movies that I love are Peanut Butter Falcon, Sixth Sense, Jaws, Goodfellas, and the list will never end if I continue.

... and of course, films you really deplore?

I also LOVE bad movies, but I absolutely cannot stand most reality TV. Things like Love Island, Kardashians etc. No hate if you enjoy them, just not for me!
