Your new movie First Moon - in a few words, what's it about, and what can you tell us about your character in it?

First Moon is about Jessica, a young woman who is abducted by a religious cult who are hell-bent on curing her from a sexually transmitted werewolf virus. Throughout the film we discover Jessica as a fierce, intelligent woman whose resilience shines as she goes through tragic events.

What did you draw upon to bring your character to life, and how much Lauren Esposito can we find in Jessica?

I loved how resilient and strong Jessica is. Whilst staying on friends’ couches, in a job she hated along with being abducted by a religious cult (haha) she just remained strong and fought for herself. I'd like to think as Lauren I'm a strong and resilient woman also.

How did you get involved with the project in the first place, what drew you to it?

I loved how different the story was from other horror movies. Bringing in religion to a classic werewolf movie was such a different and unique story to go down by.

Do talk about First Moon's director Peter McLeod [Peter McLeod interview - click here], and what was your collaboration like?

This was my second film working with Peter and it was such a joy. He really does make such an effort with us actors making sure we feel comfortable and supported throughout the entire journey. From character development at the early stages of pre-production to filming. We spent a lot of time in pre-prod working on Jess and her physicality as the werewolf which helped so much when it came to the filming day.

First Moon wasn't the first time you've worked with Peter McLeod - so do talk about your previous collaborations for a bit!

We worked on The Legend of the Five together a few years ago! He is such a joy to work with and with such a good sense of humour.

Back to First Moon - what can you tell us about the shoot as such, and the on-set atmosphere?

Being on set during First Moon was such an incredible experience. I felt lucky to have such a supportive crew and cast attached to the film so every day was enjoyable. We dealt with some harsh weather conditions, and with being on location however even in those conditions I felt so excited to go to work every day.

Any future projects you'd like to share?

Nothing in film to note as of now! I opened a Pilates studio in 2024 and my focus has been mainly on that. Who knows though something may come up soon!

What got you into acting in the first place, and did you receive any formal training on the subject?

I grew up singing and doing a lot of musical theatre at a young age so I’ve always enjoyed performing so much. When my family and I moved to Melbourne when I was 14 I decided to try screen acting. I did a few courses and workshops here and there but was lucky enough to find an agent in Australia quite quickly and started auditioning for film/TV right away.

What can you tell us about your filmwork prior to First Moon?

My first series regular role was in season 3 of Channel 7's Love Child in Australia. As we wrapped that season I got the call that I booked Warner Bros feature The Conjuring 2. Since then I moved to Los Angeles at the age of 19 and picked up a few Lifetime films and have got to work with my mum Tanya on a few of her production company One Tree Entertainment’s projects (including First Moon).

How would you describe yourself as an actress, and some of your techniques to bring your characters to life?

I try to incorporate myself as much as possible in any role that I play. Actors are humans and we are all portraying human emotions and feelings so I always tend to seek how Lauren would react.

Actresses (and indeed actors) who inspire you?

Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep.

Your favourite movies?

The Devil Wears Prada, Notting Hill, The Notebook. The Princess Diaries.

... and of course, films you really deplore?

Hmm, honestly there aren't many I can think of - I'm not a big gore fan though haha!
