Your new movie
Mauler - in a few words, what's it about, and what can you tell us
about your character in it?
Mauler is about 5 friends who decide to enter a house where a brutal
murder happened and spend the night. If they succeed they win $25,000.
Little do they know the house is not empty and in fact holds a greater
danger and an evil no one was expecting. Now the 5 race to stay alive and
escape the Mauler.
My character Jen is the voice of reason and the mom of the group. She is
definitely the one who isn't sure about this contest and house but at the
same time doesn't want to be left out.
What did you draw upon to bring your character to life, and
how much Sarah Silverson can we find in Jen? You can
definitely find me in Jen for sure, especially when It comes to her
fighting spirit, sassy nature and also her anxiety. I drew on all of those
things as well as the situational impact of what's happening throughout
the film to really make her feel real and relatable. Terence Bernie Hines, the writer
and director of
Mauler, also changed some things in the script once he got
to know me a bit better so I could relate to Jen even more. How did
you get involved with the project in the first place, what drew you to it?
I applied to
Mauler through the casting site Backstage. I remember
just being really excited about the description and characters. So I knew
I had to apply and thankfully it turned out with me being casted as Jen.
With Mauler
being a slasher movie, is that a genre at all dear to you? And to what
extent could you identify with
Mauler's take on slasher cinema? I love slashers,
thrillers and psychological horror movies so much! I feel like growing up
I wasn't really into them but once I got into high school and college I
just fell in love with the genre(s). I think
Mauler does pay homage to the
classics in the genre like the 'Halloween' franchise and
A Nightmare on Elm
Street in some ways while still being its own individual slasher.
What can you tell us about Mauler's
director Terence Bernie Hines, and what was your collaboration like?
Terence is amazing! I first met him at the in-person auditions
and proceeded to scream in his face during the scene. Terence thankfully
saw something in me and cast me as Jen. He really was open to collaborating
the entire project and was always open to improve and/or hearing what we
thought our characters would and wouldn't do. All around he's the best, and
I would love to work with him again! A few words about the shoot as such, and the on-set
atmosphere? The on-set atmosphere was incredible! I cannot
say enough wonderful things about the cast and crew! From day 1 we were
like a small family, and that only grew as filming went on. Between the
screams, blood, sweat and tears we had while filming, whenever the cameras
stopped rolling the set was full of joy and laughter. It was genuinely one
of the best sets I've been a part of. Any future projects you'd like to
share? Yes! I'm actually going to be in a series
called The Amalia Chronicles which I am so excited for! I also have a few
projects coming out in the next few months as well so keep an eye out for
those! What got you into acting in the first place,
and did you receive any formal education on the subject?
What initially got me into acting was actually my older brother. He
was an actor and model for a time when I was a little kid. Since I
couldn't be left alone at home I got to go to a lot of his
jobs/classes and it absolutely blew my mind. So from a young age I
knew I wanted to be an actor. I did some classes growing up but I was
very into sports at the time so that kind of took over for a while.
However once I got to college I knew I wanted to go to acting school.
Which led me to The American Academy of
Dramatic Arts where I graduated from in 2020.
What can you tell us about your filmwork prior to
Mauler?
Prior to
Mauler I had done a
few films and shorts but nothing too big. At the time of filming
Mauler, it was the
biggest project I had ever been a part of. Since wrapping
Mauler I've had the
opportunity to be a part of so many different projects and I am so
excited for what the future holds moving forward.
How would you describe yourself as an actress, and some of your
techniques to bring your characters to life? I would describe myself as a hardworking, relatable, collaborative and
gracious actor. I really love and respect the people I get to work with
and I'm so thankful for the opportunities I've had and continue to have. I
have a lot of techniques that I use depending on what kind of character
I'm portraying. However I really try to put myself in that character's
shoes and try to understand who they are, how they see the world and how
they deal with what's happening to them and around them.
Actresses (and indeed actors) who inspire you? There are SO
many actors I look up to who inspire me! The list includes people like:
Maggie Q, Viola Davis, Julie Andrews, Tom Hardy, Andrew Scott and the list
goes on and on. Your
favourite movies? I have 2 favorite movies that will
always be in the top spots and those are It's a Mad Mad Mad World
and the Lord of the Rings trilogy (yes, I count the
trilogy as one movie). ... and of course, films you really deplore?

It's really hard for me to deplore movies
just because I usually can find at least one thing I like about any movie
I watch. Whether that be an acting performance or the lighting or camera
shots/angles. With that being said there are some movies I will only watch
once for whatever reason. For example Saltburn - I will
never watch that movie again. Your website, social media,
whatever else? You can find me on Instagram @sarahsivo
where I post all my updates on upcoming projects, my cat and more. Anything else you're dying to
mention and I have merely forgotten to ask? Fun fact! After
wrapping one night/morning (give or take 4-5am) I almost got attacked by a
pack of raccoons! Thanks
for the interview!
