5 years ago, humankind has finally crumbled and been divided into the
haves, who live behind thick walls and have plenty of food and everything,
but are only about 5% of the world's population, and the have-nots, who
are forced to fend for themselves outside, where there's no law but the
principle of the survival of the strongest. And food is so scarce out
there that many of the have-nots have long taken to cannibalism. Jacob
(Zorba Dravillas) is lucky enough to be one of the haves, and even if he's
for opening the walled cities for some of those outside, his ideas are
only nebulous ... until during a railway journey, his train is derailed
and suddenly he finds himself in the land of the havenots, and is pretty
much almost killed upon arrival before he finds refuge in a house that's
apparently serving as a crack kitchen and that is equipped with an amazing
amount of firepower. Still, Jacob wouldn't be able to survive all that
long ... if it wasn't for Grace (Nicole Garrett), a handcuffed woman who
helps him get rid of the other occupants of the house, and defend it
against those outside - well, she doesn't just help him, she takes the
lead in killing would-be intruders and the like, showing little in terms
of remorse while Jacob is still hesitant in taking lives - to hesitant for
the situation he's in in fact ... at least at first. Eventually, between
the two of them, they manage to hold the house for quite some time, and
that's no small feat as the place is a crack kitchen of a local drug
kingpin with connection to security forces who arm him and his men to the
teeth in exchange for drugs for the land of the haves. So essentially,
Jacob is really lucky to have of all people run into Grace who makes up
for more than he lacks in combat experience. Problem is, he knows very
little about Grace and her motives and past ... First and
foremost, 5 Years After the Fall is one cool movie that not only
tells a gripping story but also manages to be on the thoughtful side and
add social criticism to its gritty looks - and all that while its approach
to things is definitely grindhouse-inspired, with many a scene of badass
violence, and all the shocks in all the right places - and a plot- and
character-twist in the third act that will leave everybody's mouth open
due to its unexpectedness. Now add to that a directorial effort that makes
the most out of the (obviously) low budget and strong performances from
the cast, and you got yourself a very powerful piece of anit-utopia!
