Riding through the desert of Nevada, bounty hunter Brisco County jr
(Bruce Campbell) stumbles upon a trio of homesteaders - Clayton (John
Walcutt), Mary (Janel Moloney) and their sick son Charlie (Adam Wylie) -
who had just been robbed by the gang of pirates led by Blackbeard LaCutte
(Andrew Divoff), an actual pirate from the Caribbean, who, having lost his
boat, had to leave the sea behind temporarily and has applied his business
model to the plains of Nevada. What's the most worrying for Clayton and
Mary now is that the pirates have also stolen Charlie's medicine, and
there isn't any in the next town either because of the pirate raids. So
Brisco, soon supported by his friend/rival Lord Bowler (Julius Carry)
decide to track down the pirates to steal some medicine back - an
expedition that eventually lands them in quicksand until Blackbeard
figures he might get a nice ransom out of the bounty hunters' employer
Socrates Poole (Christian Clemenson). Of course, Brisco and Bowler manage
to free themselves, but Socrates hasn't taken that into account as he goes
on a rescue mission for them - to walk right into a trap. And after much
to and fro it's up to Brisco, with a little help from Clayton, to free
Socrates and Bowler. And ultimately, Blackbeard LaCutte ends in quicksand
and the boy gets his medicine. The idea of desert pirates is
about as childish as it is fun, and the fun part is only helped by
Blackbeard's pirate outfit and attitude, coupled with his cannon boat
stagecoach. But what really makes this episode so entertaining is that
while everybody plays it straight and the script is adventure rather than
comedy, it also doesn't take itself very seriously at all and the cast
seem to be in on the joke - and the result is just really good fun.
