Jason (Jason Marsden), the son of Jedidiah Barkley (Adrian Sparks), who
just happens to be one of Brisco's (Bruce Campbell) employers, is
kidnapped by Brisco's arch enemy Bly (Billy Drago), who demands the last
rod of the orb as ransom for the boy - the orb as in the most powerful
weapon that's never to fall into the wrong hands, like Bly's hands, and
Bly already has most of the orb. And yet, when asked for advice by his
immediate superior Socrates Poole (Christian Clemenson), Brisco suggests
to hand over that last rod to Bly. And Bly is really prepared for that
rod, too, having kidnapped professor Wickwire (John Astin) to help him get
the orb going. Brisco has a half-assed plan to free Jason, too, but
through the orb he can communicate with his deceased dad (R. Lee Ermey) to
help him - something that doesn't always hail great results as the
relationship of Briscos junior and senior is somewhat strained. Yet
somehow Brisco'd dad gets him on the right trail. Not quick enough for
Barkley it seems as he hires Brisco's fellow bounty hunter Lord Bowler
(Julius Carry) to free Jason. Of course, much chaos ensues, up to the
point where Bly actually gets his hands on the rod and tries to initiate
the orb, which costs one of his men's (James DiStefano) life, but of
course everything ends happily in the end ... Now I'm not
saying this is a disaster, it's actually somewhat of a fun watch - but the
whole ghost daddy aspect doesn't really sit well with this episode, as it
adds fake pathos to the story when it's not needed, and doesn't sit too
well with the series as a whole, which, if it deviates from pure western,
goes for science fiction rather than the supernatural. Now I have to
repeat here, it's still totally watchable, just not a better episode of
this fun series.
