Under gouvernment orders, Brisco (Bruce Campbell) is to accompany a
stagecoach holding prisoner Emma Steed (Lisa Collins) to the Mexican
border for a prisoner exchange. However, with the coach already on the
way, Brisco's associates Socrates Poole (Christian Clemenson) and Lord
Bowler (Julius Carry) learn that there are certain parties in the US who
want Ms Steed dead to somehow launch the USA into a war with Spain -
something Brisco figures out all too soon when a passenger on the stage is
killed by a poisoned sandwich meant for Emma. Also, bumbling outlaw Peter
Hutter (John Pyper-Ferguson) makes many attempts on her life, often using
cartoon-like devices to very modest results, and hand-on-hand he proves to
be no match for Ms Steed. And on top of that, Emma doesn't like to be
Brisco's prisoner, even if she eventually turns out to be an agent for the
US, with the prisoner exchange just being a ruse. Thing is, she eventually
learns that the person who was to have sprung her in Mexico is the very
person who has betrayed her, so to avoid an American-Spanish war and save
Emma's life, Brisco and company have to come up with a plan, and fast, too
... Ok, the espionage plot that forms the basis of this episode
is horribly convoluted and doesn't seem to be all thought through,
especially as it seems to be little more than a ploy to get Emma Steed
into danger and thus get the action going. But that notwithstanding, this
is a really fun episode, with many fun supporting characters, from John
Pyper-Ferguson's Wile E. Coyote like villain to Debra Jo
Rupp's constantly complaining passenger to Timothy Leary's absent-minded
professor - whose funeral speech riddled with quotes from Beatles songs is
just pure fun. Plus the episode sure has enough action to keep everyone
entertained. On a side note, no points for everyone who has
figured out that Emma Steed is a combination of the two lead characters of
the British TV show The Avengers, Diana Rigg-era, John Steed
and Emma Peel.
