What could be more exciting than a meteor shower at Halloween? How
about having a drug-fuelled party in an abandoned house with (paid)
hookers in attendance? At least that's the thought of a quartet of
childhood friends who have since grown apart and want to reunite that way
... even if not all of them are too sure about the hooker-part of the
event - but hey, it's a party, what's the worst that can happen? Well,
that some of the guys' girlfriends show up, that's pretty bad. But it
really goes from there to worse when it turns out that one of the friends
has been taken over by some alien that multiplies and the aliens try to
take over and kill all the humans on site - and since the abandoned house
all this takes place in is miles from civilisation and the outside is
swarming with aliens, the house is relatively safe ... and a death trap
still. Now Alienween is most certainly not the most
original of films, it borrows heavily not only from Alien
- as the title suggests - but also from Italian genre cinema from
yesteryear and straight-to-video fodder from the 1980s ... but then again,
Alienween never pretends to be more than genre fun, including all
the silliness you have come to expect from a film like this, it features
more than its fair share of irony, and it's carried by a dynamic direction
editing, and endearing practical monster effects that make up for their
budgetary shortcomings with pure imagination. Fun, really!
