Clowns these days have gained a bit of a negative image thanks to their
representation in the It and
Terrifyer
series, something the interviewees in this documentary,
mostly veteran clowns who got their start in the 1980s, can't help but
notice, what with circusses closing and engagements thinning out. Now a
typical clown career would be like this, one would go to the Ringling
Brothers' clown college then hape to get a job with the touring
group, and if not try out with another circus or do kids parties. And then
there was this gig as MacDonald's' mascot Ronald MacDonald, which
might seem like a corporate job but brought in steady and good money for
clowning around. And MacDonald's made sure their clowns were all
of the highest quality. What all the clowns in this documentary have in
common, they just want to entertain, make people happy - even David Howard
Thornton, who's a professional clown buzt rose to fame as
Terrifyer's
killer prankster. So three things that happened at roughly the same time
hit the clown community hard, closing down of the Ringling Brothers,
Mac Donald's retiring Ronald and afore-mentioned horror clowns.
That said though, tje wpröd meeds something to laugh about, so maybe the
classic clown has reached the end of their line, but clowndom as such
might just be evolving ... I will admit, clowns haven't been
high on my agenda since I've been a little kid, and despite being a bit
horror fan, I've never really bought into the killer clown hype (even
though there are some good movies of this kind out there) - but this movie
triggers some appreciation for clowndom, as the interviewers all seem
authentic in their desire to just entertain, the clown acts shown are
often pretty amazing, and one just can't really resist the charm of the
many clips from vintage slapstick movies and clown TV shows popping up now
and again. So in all, a pretty engaging but also very entertaining watch
for sure.
