Out of the blue, Julia (Olga Kalashnikova), a lawyer in Berlin,
recieves a postcard from Hawaii that gives her a clue to the whereabouts
of her mother Sara (Jennifer Kinsey) she has last seen age ten, and then
and there she decides to go there, and when her boyfriend (Jock Armour)
refuses to support her in this, she rather breaks up with him than missing
her chance to reconnect after all these years. In Hawaii though she runs
into trouble immediately when she's stopped for speeding, and later her
car breaks down, and the man who offers his help is of all people Clint
(Kenneth Matepi), the very cop who has issued her speeding ticket. But
when Clint gives Julia a lift, his special needs brother Toby (Russell
Subiono), who's in the car with them, has a fit, which pretty much forces
Clint to rush home - to find their "auntie" passed out in bed.
And the very auntie just happens to be Julia's mother. Sara comes to just
one more time to see her daughter, say a few kind words and then pass away
- giving Julia anything but closure. But Julia starts to remember that her
mother did never give her up, but was booked for drug dealing with Julia
being pushed into adoption. But while Julia remembers Sara as a junkie and
loving but at best fallible, at worst failing mother, Clint and Toby had a
quite different experience with their auntie, and them all comparing notes
gives Julia a deeper, a real understanding of her mother ...
Now despite one rather shoot-out sequence, and several
depictions of drug use, this is essentially a feel-good movie, so it might
not be everyone's cup of tea. But that said, this film at the same time
feels really heart-felt, as its story feels very real, warts and all, and
the three leads don't only fill their roles well with a very relatable
touch to them, their characters also form a very interesting triangle that
really carries the story well, to make this into a pretty good watch.
