Teenaged Cassie (Angelina Danielle Cama) has never fully come over the
death of her mother, and that her dad Lucas (Harley Wallen) has since
married another woman, Sarah (Kaiti Wallen), hasn't helped things one bit.
And since Cassie has recently some (rather harmless) run-ins with the law,
Lucas has decided to move away from the big city and into the country, the
small town where he spent his childhood and youth, to start afresh - much
to Cassie's dismay, as she's not really into country life as it is, and
spotty cellphone reception doesn't make the deal any sweeter. One night at
the local pub though, she meets two youngsters very roughly her age, Anna
(Jamie Bernadette) and Tucker (Mason Heidger), and she somehow persuades
them to check out the supposedly haunted house in town, the McKinley
place. However when they do they find out the house is deemed creepy for a
cause, for one they find tapes of many missing girls being raped and
killed, for other they also find the decomposed body of grandma McKinley.
What's worse though, while still inside the house, the owners, May (Erika
Hoveland) and Clete (Jimmy Doom) return, and even though our heroes manage
to make a clean getaway, they are spotted by May and Clete, who will go to
some length to find them out. And since they can't let anyone know their
nasty secret, they're of course more than eager to kill our heroes ... Veteran
Mel Novak plays the local bartender. A pretty cool piece of
horror, especially since despite its subject matter it doesn't just fall
back on slasher, backwoods or survival horror tropes but is strong on
character building, and that's just as interested (and as interesting) in
its backstory as in its scenes of suspense and violence. And even if the
film does by no means hold back when it comes to gruesomeness, director
Harley Wallen proves just as handy with the quiet scenes, and doesn't shy
away from subtlety. And a strong ensemble cast that keeps things grounded
of course also helps to make this a pretty cool genre effort.
