To save both his new-found daughter Brandy (Arielle
Carver-O'Neill) and his friend/sidekick Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) from, well,
being dead, Ash (Bruce Campbell) and his other sidekick Pablo (Ray
Santiago) decide it's best to kill Ash with the Kandarian dagger so he can
travel to the netherworld the two are at, fetch them and then Pablo opens
the rift to get them back. And despite this being a slightly stupid plan,
it actually works - safe for the fact that for some reason Ash can't drag
Kelly back to the world of the living ...
There's some fun stuff here and some scary stuff, and quite a
bit of gore, and yet this episode is rather stale, basically because it
doesn't play on the series' strength, instead lets Ash going into straight
hero mode, with a plan that's almost as good in execution as it is in
theory - and really that he cannot drag Kelly back with him isn't even
Ash's fault. And even the odds Ash is up against aren't that significant,
especially since the episode at times just avoids explaining how he
escapes them anyhow - like when his car is dragged underground, and later
just shoots up from there for maximum effect but without explanation. All
that said, this one still has some laughs, it's just not very good.
