Luca has spent all of her life in front of cameras, ever since her parens
(Bea Brooks, Liliom Lewald) have to decided (before her birth) to turn
their lives into a podcast, and Luca was pretty much born into that
podcast - her birth has actually streamed live. For the family, the gamble
has paid off though, the podcast has become a success and is paying them
good money. On the flipside, due to being in the limelight pretty much all
the time, Luca has not had a real friend in years, her closest to being
one is their podcast's showrunner Julie (Joy Ewulu), and spending her
teenage years in publicis slowly taking a toll on her, especially when her
parents announce they're to have another kid - not out of love, just as a
business decision, and against Luca's express wishes. Luca does what many
girls her age would do in such a situation, she runs away from home - but
she knows nothing but life in front of the camera, so where can she go,
who can she turn to?
Now in its best moments, Babystar is a brilliant and
absolutely biting satire, thanks to clevre writing and also to a great
performance by Maja Bons who really captures the emotional depth of her
character. And of course, an elegant directorial effort that perfectly
ccaptures its lead character's inner emptiness doesn't hurt one bit
either. A small downside then is that the film isn't without its lengths
and sometime favours artsy imagery over narrative nedessity.
That said though, it's really the film's timeliness, relevance and insight
that make it pretty much a must-see.
Babystar will be in UK and Irish Cinemas from September 25th, 2026.
