Teresa (Bárbara Colen) returns to her hometown, the little backwoods
village Bacurau, for the funeral of its matriarch and to smuggle in some
medicine - as the village is more or less a forgotten one, its water
supply has been cut off, and delivery of food and medicine is scarce. Of
course, there's local politician Tony Jr (Thardelly Lima), but the food he
brings is mostly long past due, the medicine of a suspicious sort, and he
only brings supplies to further his political campaign anyway and is
deeply unliked. What's worse, when a tank truck carrying water makes it
through, it's shot at. What's worse, all of a sudden Bacurau starts
disappearing from all the maps, and the village loses its cellphone
signal. It really gets back when some villagers run into an ambush and end
up dead ... Not far from town, Michael (Udo Kier) camps with his gang of
mercenaries - actually rich Americans who see killing people as a sport,
and the attack on Bacurau for them is pretty much a video game come to
life. And at first they are really successful in picking out villagers one
by one and killing them in various ways. Thing is, the villagers soon grow
wise to them, and when Michael and company move in for an all-out attack,
the village is prepared to protects its own and put up deadly resistance
... Bacurau is several things all at once, political and
social commentary, comedy, action movie, science fiction, western and what
not, paying hommage to old westerns, especially of the spaghetti variety,
but also to classic and modern horror, action flicks like First
Blood, and tons of other films one might be familiar with - but
the outcome is a highly original, very bloody but also very exhilarating
film, thanks to its dark humour but also thanks to its very swift pacing,
and thanks to its very strong ensemble cast on top of that. Oh and of
course, the rather beautiful locations don't hurt one bit either. Definitely
worth a look!
