Yet again, the Cylons attack Battlestar Galactica, and in large force,
too. But there's something fishy about this particular attack, as when
intercepted by Vipers, the Cylon ships offer little resistance, they
pretty much offer themselves up to be shot out of space, so despite being
outnumbered, the forces from the Galactica soon win the upper hand - but
there's a catch to this, as two Cylon ships actually manage to break
through the Galactican defenses, and they prove to be living projectiles
on a suicide mission, with one flying right into the Galactica's bridge,
the other into one of the landing bays. Commander Adama (Lorne Greene) is
critically wounded on the bridge, leaving command in the hands of his less
experienced second-in-command Colonel Tigh (Terry Carter) - with half of
the battlestar burning, and the fire making its way to the Galactica's
power station. And series regulars Boomer (Herbert Jefferson jr), Athena
(Maren Jensen) and little Boxey (Noah Hathaway) are cut off from everyone
else in the recreation room. The battlestar's top pilots Apollo (Richard
Hatch) and Starbuck (Dirk Benedict) and new addition from last
episode Sheba (Anne Lockhart) make one attempt after another to
fan out the flames, but it soon becomes clear that to fight this kind of
fire it needs more than your regular fire brigade ...
So ok, the scenes about Boomer, Athena and Boxey caught in the
recreation room are typical soap opera/disaster movie mainstays, and
really do little to further the plot, but other than that this is a very
solid episode, as the stakes are high, the desparation of the characters
feels real, most of the effects are spot on (except for Apollo and
Starbuck's space walk where the strings they're hanging on are too clearly
visible), and the thing moves at a steady enough pace to keep one
entertained.
