short Slit-Mouthed Woman
review by Mike Haberfelner
|
Homicide detectives Roger (Adolfo Jimenez) and Sharon (Stephanie van
Burk) investigate an especially gruesome murder, allegedly perpetrated by
a masked woman who has asked her victim whether she finds her beautiful
before she killed her - and they both come to the conclusion the crime has
much to do with the Japanese legend of the slit-mouthed woman. Later, in
her apartment, Sharon is attacked by the slit-mouthed woman (Deana
Molle'), who's very real after all, and who cuts Sharon's mouth
is cut wide open. Roger, who has long been secretly in love with Sharon,
has an erotic dream about her - that eventually turns into a premonition,
and thus he storms to her apartment ... A short that shows
promise for sure - but falls short of what it could have achieved.
Basically the story isn't worked out enough to really drag one in, so the
film could have definitely done with a longer running time to familiarize
the viewer with the main characters and their backstories, which certainly
play into the central narrative. And frankly, the film also could do with
a better cast, unfortunately the acting is a little wooden here. On the
plus side, the whole thing's well-filmed, and the shock scenes really pack
a punch.
