13 year old Becky (Lulu Wilson) is really upset to learn her father
Jeff (Joel McHale) wants to marry Kayla (Amanda Brugel), only a year after
her mum has died, so she runs away to hide out in her tree house in the
woods with her dog - and is initially unaware that her home is invaded and
Jeff, Kayla and Kayla's son Ty (Isaiah Rockcliffe) are taken captive by
escaped convicts Dominick (Kevin James), Apex (Robert Maillet), Cole (Tyan
McDonald) and Hammond (James McDougall), who are looking for a key hidden
somewhere in the house. It's just, the key isn't where it was supposed to
be, which really ticks the convicts off. It's actually Becky who has found
the key earlier, and has kept it as a souvenir since. Eventually, the bad
guys find out that Becky is not only out there but has the key, too, and
they'd kill to get it - and they actually do kill Jeff, too, to show Becky
they mean business. But that only ticks Becky really off, and she arms
herself with whatever she can find and is quick to kill Cole and Hammond.
It's just, Dominick and Apex are the big guys of the four, and are not
nearly as naive as Cole and Hammond where, and versatile as she might be,
she's still just a 13 year old girl ... Ok, a 13 year old
taking on and defeating a quartet of hardened criminals might sound
ludicrous, and in that respect, yes of course this film is in some way
reminiscent in concept of Home Alone of 30 years earlier, just replacing
comedy with violence, and definitely not aimed at the kiddie crowd. Thing
is, the film is so cleverly built up that however ridiculous the premise,
it works in the context, and it keeps things going at a fast enough pace
too to keep the audience engaged and relating with the titular character,
rooting for her even. And Lulu Wilson seems to be just the right actress
for the job, getting both the innocence of girls her age as well as her
character's tough-as-nails attitude just right, leading a very solid
ensemble. Plus, for all gorehounds, this movie has some really cool,
inventive and gory kills to offer to entertain throughout.
