As his mother's (Jennifer Ruth) is terminal ill and he wants to spend her
last days with her, Jacob (Zach Tinker) has moved back to where he grew up
at, a small coastal village with a dilapitating lighthouse being its own
attraction. However, with mother slipping in and out of conscousness and
being plagued by late stage dementia, Jacob soon realizes there's not much
that he can do for her, so to kill some time he decides to
retrace his childhood he has oddly little memory of. In fact the only
thing he remembers is Claire ((Vasi Buckovska), his best friend as a boy
(in flashbacks played by Kieran Sitawi), who eventually disappeared from
his life and he has no idea why. Then he learns that Claire''s dad Jim
(John Pyper-Ferguson) is the current owner of said lighthouse, and he
needs somebody to fix it up so he can sell it, a job he's actually
qualified to do. So he somehow manages to Jim, a man with a rather grumpy
disposition, to hire him, that way not only earning money but also finding
out the whereabouts of his friend of old. But initially, Jim evades
Jacob's questions and proves rather difficult to talk to per se. Plus he
leaves Jacob on the island the lighthouse on for hours on end and forces
him to sleep there while he sleeps in a trailer in town. And during the
nights, Jacob is haunted by memories of Claire he just can't place,
visions of her, and eventually he's haunted by her though he doesn't know
why. And he'd sure go crazy if it wasn't for the occasional visits of
Olivia (Ana Nicolle Chavez), a good-natured young local who has taken an
instant liking in him. Eventually he corners Jim and questions him about
his daughter, to find out she has died the very year he has been born - so
something feels seriously off, and either Jacob is losing his mind or
something even more snister is gong on ... Now if you're someone who
likes their horror gard-fitting, fast-paced and brutal, then this silm is
bound to disappoint you: Beneath the Light's horror is
definitely on the slowburn side of the spectrum, more intersted in
building up the central mystery of its story than shocking its audience,
fleshing out the film's central character while doing so. This works out
thanks to a clever script, an atmosphere-heavy direction that gets the
most out of its rather impressive main location, and a small ensemble cast
delivering relatable, grounded performances. And the result is enjoyably
creepy piece of genre cinema.
