Politics is dirty business, so when after some problems with the
Russian mafia Mayor Alderman (John Savage) allows the Mexican cartel to
take over, the Russian kingpin Mikhail (Harley Wallen) isn't all that
pleased, understandably. So Mikhail has the mayor's daughter Marie (Kaiti
Wallen) kidnapped to eventually be sold as one of his sex slaves - which
causes the mayor set up a task force led by detectives Miller (Aphrodite
Nikolovski) and Redford (Jennifer Jelsema) ... and while both of them are
more than capable women who catch the right scent quicker than can be
expected, the mayor was too good in covering up the tracks to be found
previously. So he also hires Wolf (Billy Wirth), pretty much the most
ruthless man there is, as his back-up plan, as Wolf has his way to torture
things out of people and get a kick out of it as well. Thing is, for one
Mikhail is woven so deep into the system he can expect to win a fight with
the police, and his men disappearing sets his alarms off, and he always
has a plan B ... Now one thing's for sure, even in the modern
gangster movie realm Betrayed's not for the faint-hearted, and even
if it's not terribly graphic, it does get the mind into dark places - but
the real raison d'être of this film isn't to be just torture porn, but
tell a compelling story that isn't black and white at all but told in many
shades of grey, without adhering to a genre formula that heralds who's
going to live and who's going to die ages in advance but keeps the
audience on the edge of their seats throughout. And thanks to a strong
cast and a directorial effort that finds the right balance between
expliciteness and atmosphere throughout, all resulting in a pretty
powerful genre piece.
