Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons), two socially
awkward genius scientists who share an apartment, find out they've got a
new neighbour, Penny (Kaley Cuoco), an attractive girl roughly their age
who couldn't care less about science but seems to be in constant high
spirits. While Sheldon regards her as mere distraction, Leonard falls for
her head over heels, invites her over to a rather awkward dinner, and
promise he and Sheldon would get her TV back from her ex (Brian Patrick
Wade) - which leaves them with nothing but black eyes though ... Now
even at its worst, The Big Bang Theory was usually good for
a few chuckles at least, but one can't deny that the show has grown a tad
stale over the years, falling into all the sitcom clichés that it tried
to avoid early on - so in retrospect, this pilot episode feels like a
breath of even fresher air than when it first aired, as everything still
feels novel, from the protagonists' awkwardness to the situations they're
thrown into. And the choice of science nerds heading a series alone is
already a touch of genius. So basically, even if you've grown tired of the
series as a whole, you might find this one quite amusing.
