Woody (Jordan Chan) and Bee (Sam Lee) are two young men without much of
a future: They have dead end jobs at the local mall's VCD store, lose at
gambling whatever they earn, have turned to picking pockets to improve
their finances (but are not too successful at it) ... and they have just
run over a man, who unfortunately was carrying with him some zombie-serum
in a soft drink bottle, a serum Woody and Bee feed him in an effort to
keep him from dying. The guy dies anyways, and in their desparation, Woody
and Bee put him into the trunk of their car to get rid of him later and
return to the mall. Once in the mall, the corpse comes back to life as a
zombie of course, infects others, and soon, Woody and Bee are on the run
from zombies, accompanied by big-mouthed coward Kui (Lai Yiu-Cheung), his
wife (Tam Suk Mooi), and lovely Jelly (Lai Suk Yin). In times of danger,
Woody, not known for his courage, becomes a hero though, and he goes out
of his way to save his almost-girlfriend Rolls (Angela Tong Ying-Ying),
who has so far only been protected from zombie attacks by Loi (Emotion
Cheung), the guy who has always secretly been in love with her, but who is
only now able to show her. The problem of course is that he has already
been turned into a zombie. Anyways, after much running to and fro, only
Woody and Rolls make it out of the mall, and in Woody's car, too, but
outside they have to learn that the whole town has been overrun by
zombies. Then Woody sees Rolls drinking from the zombie serum, mistaking
it for a soft drink - which of course means she will be turned in minutes
-, and as an act of true love, Woody drinks from it as well ... Now
you can't blame this film for not trying to be an original zombie comedy,
as it has really got its moments of almost-ingenuity - but as a whole,
this is a rather disappointing film. Maybe the biggest problem of the
whole thing is that the two lead characters are much too annoying to
identify with. On top of that, despite their efforts, they are not really
funny. Besides that, too little actual use is made of the mall-settings,
of which such beautiful use had been made in the original Dawn
of the Dead. Then there's the plot, which quite simply lacks
proper build-up and wastes way too much time prior to the zombies arriving
on the scene. And finally, once the zombies do arrive, the action is
pretty much routine, as if the filmmakers had run out of ideas in the most
decisive moments. Now the film is certainly not the worst zombie comedy
ever, but even more certainly far from the best one.
