Some parasitic virus has decimated humankind, so much so that the "chosen ones" - mainly the super-rich, politicians and top level scientists - have retreated into safe compounds to leave the rest of humankind to rot. And rotting is meant quite literally here, as the virus makes humans decay alive, while also turning violent against other humans. And their rotting stench is then to attract mutated chickens, who have introduced us to the virus in the first place and who now feast on rotten human flesh.

Jon (Sam Beaton) is a scientist at one of the compounds who tries to find a cure for the virus, and he actually thinks he has succeeded - and about time, too, as in a lab accident he has infected himself, and now he and his wife Rosie (Vassiliki Gicopoulos) are quarantined to a mansion off the compound, where Jon thinks he's coming around quite nicely - only he's not, and to her horror, Rosie's the first to notice ...

By and large, I'm not too big a fan of the found footage approach to filmmaking, but Birdcall gets it right by not drawing too much attention to its style while working it into the story rather organically and still aiming for a cinematic approach - including proper editing - to convey the feeling of isolation of its characters rather than going for shortcuts- And add to that a clever script and relatable actors, and you're left with an utterly worthwhile genre piece.
