A Screambox exclusive: Of late, the tables have
been turned on vampirekind when it has been found out that vampire blood
is actually a highly addictive blood. The one problem is that if one
overdoses, you turn into a vampire oneself. in front of this backdrop,
cousins Eric (John R. Howley) and Sean (Jasper Jones) are on the run from
a dangerous drug dealer, Dustin (Andrew Bell), after having lost his stash
without a way to repaying him. They make it to a presumably abandoned
house, and it's then when Sean starts to act more and more erratic, as if
having withdrawal symptoms. And when they find a girl, Sarah (Tori Wong) -
and Sean immediately slashes her throat and drinks her blood - and
overdoses. And if it wasn't for Sarah's rapid intervention, he would have
turned, too, but she tells Eric what to do just in time. Because you see,
Sarah's not a vampire by choice and doesn't find pleasure in making others
suffer. She actually wants to go to Canada to get treatment for her
condition, but she can't do it on her own so asks Eric for assistance. In
return she even offers to give him some blood to settle the balance with
Dustin. This of course seems to be the perfect solution for everybody's
problems. Only, when things appear to be too perfect they usually are,
because when Sean delivers the blood to Dustin, Dustin demands to know
where it's from. And he doesn't shy away from violence and even murder to
get his hands on it ... Now sure, Bleeding isn't the first movie to
liken vampirism to addiction by a longshot, but that said, writer/director
Andrew Bell puts quite a clever spin on it, blurring the line between good
and evil more than many other films of its ilk while freely blending
elements of horror, addiction drama and gangster movie to a surprisingly
coherent whole, helped by an atmosphere-heavy directorial effort and a
very competent cast. Just be warned, this is by no means a geel-good movie
or a mindless horror ride - but a pretty rewarding piece of vampire cinema
still.
