Yuji is an obsessive colletor of action figures, mainly those based on
American comicbook superheroes, & for these collectors it is essential
to never take the figures out of their blister packs. His obsession
leads to his girlfriend Mummi repeatedly breaking up with him (but never
really being able to leave him for good), & him eventually losing his
job working at a bar.
& there's one big goal he has, to one day find the rarest action
figure of them all, Hellbanker (dubbed The Financier of
the Netherworld), which is based on a comicbook which is equally rare
... & as a matter of fact, neither the comic nor the figure might
actually exist, & the photocopy of the comic which Yuji has might be a
fake.
In his search for Hellbanker, Yuji has 2 allies, Terada, a science
fiction fanatic whose dream it is to make his own movie, & Hayamoto, a
robot otaku (otaku = an obsessive fan, who puts his hobby above everything
else, even [especially] his social life).
Eventually, Terada even makes his own (amateur) movie with his friends,
featuring some old fashioned miniature special effects ... but he is so
disappointed withthe finished product (not the effects but his script)
that he vanishes for good).
Hayamoto meanwhile meets a lovely young girl, a pseudo artist herself,
who shows interest into his robot designs from an artistic point of view
& encourages him to do soething for an art exhibition ... but when she
sees the finished product, drawings in which he has turned her into a
robot that can transform into both a fighterplane and a tank, she is
shocked about his narrow-mindedness & breaks up with him. Ultimately
though, Hayamoto would win a robot design competition with the designs.
Eventually, Yuji learns about a crate from a Korean toy factory that is
supposed to hold the last ever Hellbanker figure, & he bribes a
truckdriver big time - he has to sell his furniture to be able to pay up,
which makes Mummi leave him once again - to give him the crate ...
Meanwhile, sad & lonely at the beach, Mummi stunmbles over Kuhino,
the sculptor who has made thge Hellbanker figure ...
She wants to tell Yuji about it just when he's about to open the crate
to look for Hellbanker ... but right then, Kimura, a psychotic, criminal
collector of all things rare (with a knack for buying fakes), decides to
hold him up ... & in the fight that ensues, a shot is fired &
Mummi is wounded - & what's more, the crate didn't even hold a
Hellbanker figure, only the vastly inferior Hellbomber ...
Later, with Mummi well again, she & Yuji again visit the beach
& meet Kuhino, & Kuhino finally gives Yuji Hellbanker, the object
of his desire - & Yuji opens the blisterpack & takes the figure
out (something positively unthinkable for a collector), because now he
knows that actually, never was Hellbanker the object of his desire but
always Mummi, his mind was only to clouded to see. & not only that, he
has begun drawing his own comicbook again - which someday might be turned
into a line of action figures, too ...
The world of figure collecting is an interesting & weird
one & should contain enough material for a film. & occasionally, Blister
lives up to its promise of showing a weird parallel world - but only
occasionally. For the most part, the film just shows cool pics, as if
being an action figure promotion, & loses itself in a few meaningless
pulp subplots, util culminating in a cheesy ending. It's not all bad, it
just could have been so much better.
