Dona Marisa's daughter Katherine (Amalia Fuentes) has died - so she
asks scientist Dr Marco (Ronald Remy), who is also a vampire and
Katherine's lover, to restore her back to life. Marco agrees to it, but
claims he needs the heart of Katherine's twin sister Cherito (also Amalia
Fuentes), whom her mum has given away at birth. So Marco's vampire minions
soon set out to kill Cherito's foster parents and before long, Dona Marisa
has invited her over to her estate - but it might already be a tad to
late, because Cherito's friends Victor (Eddie Fernandez) and Ruben have
already found out that vampires are really roaming the
neighbourhood and have contacted a priest for help. And then there's Dona
Marisa, who has second thoughts about letting her daughter Cherito being
killed by Marco, just for the sake of her other daughter, so she even
helps her escape - but not before Marco has put her under a hypnotic spell
...
Also, Dona Marisa is not very happy when she realizes her daughter is
revived as a vampire, but now it's too late, because Katherine is already
alive again, even without Cherito's heart.
Meanwhile Cherito, Ruben, Victor, Victor's two sisters and the priest
have gathered in church and pray for Marco and Katherine, and wouldn't you
know it, the vampire's curse is lifted from the couple and they can live
as normal people - but only until Katherine injures herself, and now Marco
needs Cherito's heart more than ever, and he uses his hypnotic powers to
lure her back and his vampire minions to fight off adversaries. But
ultimately, Victor manages to transform a funeral procession into an angry
mob and fight the vampires with stakes and a flare gun - vampires fear
bright light - until Cherito is saved and most of them are dead, only
Marco, the devil incarnate, has somehow managed to escape ...
In writing, this film sounds like a typical piece of vampire trash, and
to be quite honest, the film isn't too great in storytelling, either.
However, Blood Drinkers might still be one of the best horror films
of its time, thanks to Gerardo De Leon's moody, almost poetic direction,
his wonderful use of his exotic backdrops, and most of all thanks to his
innovative, almost avant garde use of tinted filmstock, alternating ever
so often with normal colour film and often changing colour within one
shot, which gives the film a certain dreamlike atmosphere quite unlike
everything you have ever seen before (and only very rarely since, for that
matter). And for that alone, the film is simply a must-see.
