Deckard (Tom Paxinos), a war veteran with PTSD who has actually lived
through a near death experience, has had a really bad day - when two
gorgeous women, Amber (Cortney Llewellyn) and Star (Iryna Rodionova) show
up at the doorstep of the place he shares with Chris (Aric Weber), and
their motives seem to be obvious ... until they turn out to be vampires,
and while Chris is quickly sucked dry, Star, who takes a sip of Deckard's
blood, spontaneously blows up as a consequence. And suddenly, Deckard
finds himself on the run from vampires. So he joins a group of vampire
hunters led by Vinnie (Timothy Patrick Quill), where he meets with fierce
opposition from Vinnie's son Mack (Aaron Malek) but Moxie (Amy Truax), the
only female in the group, shows definite interest. The group's first
assignment proves to be a successful one, even though Deckard has to admit
to himself he might have bitten off a bit more than he can chew, as
despite all his military training the heroics are all done by the others.
That said, all the vampires that try to bite him, just blow up - which is
explained later might be due to his near death experience. The next day
though, Deckard finds his ex (Stacey Faldetta) and his son (Kaden
Sterkenburg) slaughtered by vampires, apparently as retaliation for him
blowing up Star (which he didn't even do on purpose), and he finds out
that it was Mack that led the vampires there. Turns out Star was the
girlfriend of Caleb (Chas Llewellyn), a vampire rather high up in the
hierarchy, who really wants to have his revenge on Deckard - and thus even
lures Deckard and the rest of the gang into a trap. But of course, our
heroes come prepared - it's just less than certain that their preparations
do suffice ...
Now The Blood Hunter is what I'd call a hard-boiled
vampire movie, as it's not a simple story of heroes fighting villains but
presents the audience with broken characters who are at times denied
redemption, and who have no choice but to follow what fate has in store
for them. But The Blood Hunter is also a movie that delivers in
gore, tension and atmosphere, and everything the film has built up in the
first two thirds is bound to just blow one away in the finale that's
chock-full of macabre to grotesque ideas, morbid suspense scenes and
over-the-top gore just to ice the cake. A pretty awesome genre
rollercoaster, actually!
