For years now, underground scientists Trevor (David Wassilak) and Jeff
(Charles Heuvelman) have troed to open a gateway to another dimension, and
only now have they succeeded and have managed to bring beings from the
other side over. And somehow this has all to do with the number 11, as the
gate only opens at 11:11, both am and pm. Trevor soon dives deep into his
research and wants to somehow stabilize the gate - and this is when a box
starts to turn up at random places around town to open its lid at exactly
11:11 to pretty much suck up whoever's around. These people return
eventually but seem different and lacking in the emotions department.
Basically they act as if possessed by some alien race trying to pass as
humans. And here's where the story circles back to Trevor's basement lab,
as for the sake of science, Trevor seems to have given up on his own race
...
Now despite its pretty big theme, The Box is not a
spectacle movie, it's much more character-based and -driven, chooses story
over action, and keeps things rather intimate. And the film might be a bit
confusing in its episodic and at times non-linear storytelling at first,
but eventually develops into a rather fascinating puzzle, where at first
unrelated storylines come together in surprising ways to form a rather
fascinating whole. And of course, a very competent cast also doesn't hurt
to make this into a very unusual ne3vertheless totally worthwhile genre
ride.
