Because of an erupting prison riot, two inmates are thrown into prison
bitch and drug runner Darrel's (Wade Radford) private cell, gloomy Seth
(Tama Phethean) and prison bully Lanks (Gavin Jackson). The atmosphere
turns explosive before too long, especially since Darrel can't help but
trying to play his temporary cellmates against one another - but the three
of them have been in the slammer for too long to cause any real ruckus -
which all changes when Nico (James Whitehurst), a new boy, is thrown into
the cell as well. Being not nearly as tough/hardened as the others, he
takes the situation way more gravely and makes the mistake of letting his
feelings show - much to the joy of especially Darrel and Lanks, who both
have their go at torturing him mentally and also physically ... and when
Nico turns to Seth for help, he makes the mistake of his life, as just
because Seth hasn't tortured Nico yet doesn't mean he cares for him - in
the least ... Basically, Boys Behind Bars is just four
man in one prison cell, filmed in just a handful of long takes - and it
works quite nicely, too, essentially because it's based on a very
interesting and rather explosive situation, without just being vulgar it
doesn't shy away from getting dirty (though there's nothing really
explicit in here), and it's carried by a quartet of well-drawn and
well-played characters. Now Boys Behind Bars is definitely not a
feel-good movie, but if you can accept to be slightly, erm, offended in
your sense for "good taste", then this is definitely a film to
watch!
