Three troubled teens - Dean (Rian Gordon), Duncan (Lewis Gribben) and
DJ Beatroot (Viraj Juneja) - and a clueless nerd , Ian (Samuel Bottomley)
are given the task to trek across the Scottish Highlands for the Duke of
Edinburgh Award - basically as a last resort paedagogic measure. Of
course, all city kids they're ill-equipped for extensive county hikes, and
they mess up pretty much from the get-go, which includes destroying their
only map and accidently killing their carer (Jonathan Aris) - and that's
before they meet the Duke (Eddie Izzard), who has made it a sport for him
and his aristocratic friends to hunt and kill witless students trying for
the Duke of Edinburgh Award, if needs must even in a sacrificial ritual.
And suddenly our youngsters find themselves on the run, with no clue where
to go to ... Even if my synopsis doesn't sound like it, Boyz
in the Wood is a comedy, and a rather hilarious one at that, one that
easily combines the macabre and the grotesque with slapstick, situation
and even gross-out humour while still telling its story straight and
affording its main characters something resembling a heart. And of course,
a direction that's aware of the film's horror roots and doesn't just go
for the cheap jokes, and a fine ensemble cast make this a pretty fun
movie, one that should play well with party crowds.
