Nate (Nicholas Hamilton) is something like a trouble child at his school,
and when he ggets arrested for a break-jn (which he in fact did
commit), nobody's really surprised and everybody's more than happy to move
on - everybody but sympaathetic teacher Stan (Jared Harris), who takes an
interest into Nate's case, and upon learning the boy's an orphan who had
been living him his car and has hardly enough money to feed himself, he
calls in on a few favours and makes Nate his ward. At first, Nate has
troubles even accepting that somebody tries to be nice to him, but
gradually he opens up to the man and tries to turn his life around. But of
course, he's also a teenager, and a particularly hot-headed one at that,
so he screws up again and again, so much so that Stan's almost ready to
give up - until he finds out about Nate's troubled past and understands
that Nate has to face his past trauma to overcome his present problems.
But by then it might already be too late, as Nate also has a suicidal
streak ... Now granted, at times this film feels amost a bit too
on-your-nose, which the Christmas-themed feel-good ending only seems to
underline, and also the story's central character seems to be a bit flatly
written, but at the same time, Brave the Dark is also
very sincere in its message, finds depth in his story, and Jared Harris
manages to flesh out his character more than what was written in the
script, surrounded by a very competent cast. And the directorial effort of
the piece is suitably subtle but compelling in all the right moments. So
if you're not totally allergic to coming-of-age dramas, you definitely
ought to give this on e a try.
Brave the Dark will be released on digital in the UK
by Kaleidoscope Home Entertainment on September 15th, 2025. |
