The early 2020s, when the whole world is paralyzed by the Covid
pandemic - and yet actress Carol (Karen Gillan) manages to land a role in
a big movie ... not an important movie, mind you, just some
over-budgeted Jurassic Park-like dinosaur pulp called Cliff
Beasts 6: Battle for Everest, that's basically hurried into production
as it's the only film other than a Tom Cruise movie that's shot at the
time and that should give its studio an edge. The "shoot" begins
with a 2 week quarantine that drives her almost to exhaustion, then she's
supposed to live in a bubble - a luxurious hotel at least - with the cast
and crew - which include always horny actor Dieter (Pedro Pascal), series
lead Dustin (David Duchovny), who thinks himself the heart of the series
and thus constantly re-writes the script, whether anyone asks for it or
not, his on-again-off-again girlfriend Lauren (Leslie Mann),
actor-turned-self-help guru Sean (Keegan-Michael Key), Tic-Toccer for the
young demographic Krystal (Iris Apatow), the film's director,
indie-wunderking gone blockbuster Darren (Fred Armisen), and the like. And
the shoot seems to be a disaster from day 1 (well, 15), not only because
the actors have to fight themselves through an ever-changing script filled
to the brim with stilted dialogue (and a dancing dinosaur), but also
because the production company has little concerns for the cast's health
and safety, and then there's the usual infighting between all the actors,
over-blown security run by Mr. Best (Russ Lee) to see that nobody leaves
the bubble - which ultimately costs Lauren a hand -, and a
behind-the-scenes camera guy (Nick Kocher) with a talent to get into
everyone's face at exactly the wrong time. Carol tries to stage a
rebellion, but for the longest time fails due to her fellow actors' apathy
- or even jealousy -, and that's before it's found out the production
company has placed a mole (Galen Hopper) in the actors' camp ...
Now it stands to reason that this movie won't age all that
well, as there no doubt will be a time when the pandemic will be a thing
of the past and nobody wants to be reminded of it anymore - but since
lockdowns, bubbles and the like are still all-too fresh in one's memory,
the film's rather hilarious, especially for its topical humour. Now that's
not to say the film's without its shortcomings, some of the comedy is a
bit too low-brow, some characters a bit too clichéed, and the whole also
lacks narrative stringency or in many cases solid character arcs, so the
ending feels a bit pulled out of the hat. But at the same time the movie
boasts a very solid cast and features many really funny setpieces to make
it a totally entertaining watch.
