Via a weird gold ball that serves as beacon, both Buck Rogers (Gil
Gerard) and Princess Ardala (Pamela Hensley) - with their respective
entourages - are lured through a black hole to another universe, to the
planet Plenar to be precise, where the Keeper of the planet (Sam Jaffe)
explains to them that the civilisation of the planet has reached such a
level that they have abolished war for good, and thus lack offensive
weapons. And a shield around Plenar makes the planet impenetrable for
outer space invaders - at least it did for the longest time, but now evil
Princess Zarina (Julie Newmar) has kidnapped the inventor of the shield,
Kodus (Donald Petrie), to torture the secrets of the thing out of him -
and her battleship already lies in waiting. The Plenarians want Buck and
Ardala to do their defense for them. And while Buck is quickly convinced,
Ardala needs some more convincing - like that they can't make their way
back to their universe without the Plenarians help ... and even then she
tries to throw her lot with Zarina, but Zarina soon sees her for the
spoilt brat she is and has her incarcerated. The situation on Plenar soon
turns desparate when Zarina's henchmen manage to land on the planet,
intrude the planet's main building and destroy the computer that runs the
shield. Buck rushes to Zarina's ship while leaving defense of the planet
in hands of his right hand Wilma (Erin Gray) and Ardala's right hand Kane
(Michael Ansara). On Zarina's ship Buck is captured of course and thrown
into a jail cell together with Ardala and Kodus, and of course it's no
problem for the three of them to trick the guards and break out, make it
to their ship and return to Plenar where Kodus can repair the shield just
in time for Zarina's battleship to crash into it head-on. B movie fave
Sid Haig plays Zarina's right hand man. This two-part season
finale of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century's first season is
really the best episode of the series in a long time, as for a change it
contains more than Buck just running up and down some corridors and
solving problems with his fists (though there is some of this, too) but
shows actual scope (even if the special effects don't all live up to the
requirements), with Julie Newmar making a great foe ... but really the
best performance of this entry comes from Pamela Hensley, who has finally
really found into her role as Ardala, and is (intentionally) hilarious
portraying her. Too bad this was her last appearance in the role.
