As the vampire menace on Sunnydale seems to be averted (see previous episode, The
Harvest), Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) decides to take up cheerleading
as a social activity, but already at the tryouts she has to realize her haunted
past won't/can't leave her alone, as one (perfect) contestant soon catches fire
due to spontaneous combustion - which was definitely caused by some witchcraft.
Only the next day, Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter) - cheerleader par excellence -
almost causes an accident at her driving lesson due to some weird trance she
has been put in, & is then almost run over by a car.
Buffy, her fellow students Willow (Alyson Hannigan) & Xander (Nicholas
Brendon) & her mentor, librarian Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) track down
the cause of all these freak accidents to young Amy (Elizabeth Anne Allen), who
has been driven to cheerleading by her mom (Amanda Wilmshurst), who was once a
cheerleading queen, but her life has since taken a downwards turn, & in amy
now sees the perfect opportunity to relive her past glories. There is just one
problem, Amy is incredibly klutzy, & is only chosen as an alternate for the
cheerleaders' team.
Problem is: Buffy has also been chosen as an alternate, & she will be
chosen to the regular team before Amy ... So the next day, Buffy finds herself
under a spell, too, that first causes her to behave like on a high from alcohol
- which gets her effectively get kicked out of the team - before breaking down
& slowly dieing.
To save Buffy, Giles takes her to Amy's house to find her book of spells
& reverse them all - & then they find out that Amy isn't really Amy but
her mother (& vice versa), whop has - due to her magical powers - switched
bodies with her daughter & has now reached her goal as she's on the
cheerleading team again.
Of course, in the end, Giles can reverse the spells, as Amy's mother (as
Amy) is doing a cheerleading routine, & in the end, in some kind of magic
duel, Amy's mother (by now in her own body again) disintegrates herself ...
Despite the fact that cheerleading seems to be a spooky enough thing in
itself for most people (especially non-Americans) this episode rather downplays
the series' horror elements for rather run-of-the-mill high-school-soap,
the witchcraft subplot is just a tad too corny & the little mystery that is
thrown into the mix is solved way too soon (& at the same time the solution
is way too obvious in the first place). Still, some snappy dialogue & a
reasonably fast pacing keep this from being a total failure.
