Don Taco (Mario Valdez Juarez) is somewhat of an institution in his
neighbourhood: In his puny taco stand he makes the best tacos in town, but
he also always has an open ear for the locals and their problems ... and
the locals love him ... but not so food inspector Tomas (Ronin Rodarte),
who has all kinds of concerns regarding the health regulations of Don
Taco's stand ... but that's probably mainly to properly bribe him ... Maria
(Claudia Vazquez) lives right above where Don Taco has his stand, so she
comes across him all the time ... and within time, he has grown very
attached to her. Maria's boyfriend Luis (Eric Feliciano) is a no-good
petty criminal who always promises her to get a decent job sometime soon,
but the only thing he actually does is helping Tomas with his schemes to
spy out Don Taco to extort more money from him. Eventually, Maria receives
an eviction notice, and while Luis has nothing better to say than
"I'll take care of everything" - a promise he has made a few
times too often to still sound believable -, Don Taco promises to really
help out ... if she accepts his invitation for dinner at his place that
night, no strings attached of course. Maria has little choice but to
accept, but there's a problem, Don Taco has a dim-witted brother (Rene
Rodriguez) who's madly in love with Maria (as is Don Taco) ... Oh, and
there's yet another problem, actually: The meat Don Taco uses for his
tacos is actually human flesh, and Maria's boyfriend Luis has just earned
himself a spot on the menu ... Carne the Taco Maker is I
have to admit a less than perfect film: It suffers from a slow start, a
few too many irrelevant scenes just to bring the movie to feature length,
and some of the humour is too pointlessly over-the-top to actually work -
but while it might not be the best feature ever shot, it works more than
well as a party movie, with all the right elements firmly in place, crude
humour, quite a bit of violence (though nothing too explicit), plenty of
grotesque scenes, and just the right over-the-topness that's best enjoyed
beer in hand. So no greatness here, just great fun!
